A Comprehensive Vision
The Sports Complex Courts and Canopy in Pallejá, designed by JPAM and Masala Consultors, exemplify a holistic approach to architectural design. The team, consisting of Jorge Perea, Amado Martín, Samuel Llovet, and Masala Consultors, embarked on the project with the aim of imparting character, coherence, and spatial clarity to the complex.
Unifying Disparate Spaces
Initially, the Sports Complex had evolved in a fragmented manner to accommodate its growing program. In response, the architects reorganized the sports courts, adopting a checkerboard layout strategy. The use of color in the flooring served to unify the diverse spaces within the complex, seamlessly integrating areas for sports activities and spectator zones.
A Weightless Canopy
To maintain an open atmosphere and spatial continuity, the multi-sports court was covered without enclosing it completely on any side. The canopy, characterized by its weightlessness, features white metallic elements supported by strategically positioned concrete screens and steel pillars. This structural contrast creates a sense of effortless suspension, almost as if the canopy is floating above its supports.
Translucent Façades
The façades, composed of translucent flaps cut at varying heights, contribute to the complex’s unique identity. From the exterior, they present as an abstract, solid volume, while from within, they allow natural light to filter through, offering glimpses of the urban surroundings. This double reading enhances the spatial experience for users and observers alike.
Dynamic Roof Design
The inclination of the roof plane minimizes visual impact towards the street, maintaining a discreet profile. Conversely, it rises to its maximum height at the front, framing views of the sports activities and the picturesque landscape of the Llobregat Valley. This dynamic design element enhances the connection between the complex and its surroundings.
Illuminating Urban Nights
At night, interior lighting transforms the perception of the complex, turning it into a focal point within the cityscape. The interplay between interior illumination and external views creates an engaging spectacle, integrating the city with the activities within the complex. The canopy emerges as a distinctive feature, reshaping the urban landscape of Pallejá.
The Sports Complex in Pallejà stands as a testament to innovative design, where architectural ingenuity and functional considerations converge to create a dynamic and inviting space for sports and community engagement.
