Bold Design Approach
The National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS) in Goa, India, represents a departure from the conventional architectural style adopted by government institutions in the country. The Goa State government’s decision to host an international competition for the institute’s design signaled a desire for a bold and iconic structure that transcends mere functionality. M:OFA Studios, tasked with this challenge, aimed to create an architectural masterpiece that not only makes a statement but also resonates with the local Goan architectural ethos while embracing a more global perspective.
Functional Zoning and Fluid Spaces
The design process began with the segmentation of the functional brief into distinct zoning chunks, including institutional, administrative, residential, and recreational areas. However, instead of rigidly compartmentalizing these zones, the architects opted for fluid and continuous spaces between them. These in-between areas facilitate informal interactions among various groups on campus, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Additionally, the overall architectural language sought to establish a connection with the surrounding sea and the Goan town, blending seamlessly with the coastal environment.
Dynamic Architecture Inspired by the Sea
Drawing inspiration from the dynamic nature of the sea, the architecture of NIWS embodies the ebb and flow of oceanic waves. From above, the structure resembles a mythical creature emerging from the Arabian Sea, mirroring its fluidity and power. Within its spaces, the architecture appears to be in constant motion, with shifting perspectives and undulating forms that create a sense of dynamism. Walls, floor plates, and roofs engage in a fluid dialogue, enveloping users in an immersive experience reminiscent of the sea’s ever-changing landscape.
Digital Fabrication and Innovative Roof Structure
Central to NIWS’s design is its distinctive roof structure, which mimics the fluidity of waves through digital fabrication techniques. The mega roof, spanning 4000 square meters, is clad with color-coated roofing sheets, providing both aesthetic appeal and cost-effectiveness. The roof is constructed as a lightweight grid shell structure, comprising over 15,000 pipes of varying lengths assembled into smaller part modules. More than 5000 customized roof panels, each uniquely shaped, were CNC cut and folded to fit together seamlessly, creating a visually striking parametric wave roof. This innovative assembly not only enhances the building’s architectural significance but also ensures efficient water drainage, making it one of India’s most complex digitally fabricated roofs.
