Redefining Aquatic Excellence: Zhejiang HuangLong Aquatics Center

Nestled in the heart of Hangzhou, the Zhejiang HuangLong Aquatics Center stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and aquatic prowess. As the designated venue for the 2022 Asian Games, this state-of-the-art facility redefines the boundaries of aquatic sports and architectural innovation.

A Grand Vision

Spanning an impressive 49,000 square meters and boasting 3,000 seats, the aquatics center is a marvel of modern engineering. It houses a standard competition pool measuring 50m x 25m, a training pool measuring 50m x 21m, and a diving pool measuring 21m x 25m. Situated amidst the scenic backdrop of West Lake, this architectural gem seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetic splendor.

Overcoming Spatial Constraints

Challenged by limited construction space, the architects devised a groundbreaking solution to maximize functionality without compromising on comfort. By strategically positioning the competition pool and diving pool on the same level, while elevating the training pool 10m above the competition pool, they ensured optimal ventilation and natural lighting for all three pools. This innovative approach not only adheres to local building codes but also enhances the overall user experience.

Fluid Forms, Ethereal Beauty

The center’s distinctive roofline, characterized by undulating curves, evokes a sense of fluidity and motion reminiscent of the waves in a swimming competition. The façade, adorned with perforated aluminum shading devices, pays homage to the picturesque landscapes of West Lake while mitigating the effects of harsh sunlight. This harmonious blend of form and function creates a captivating architectural masterpiece that captures the essence of Hangzhou’s cultural heritage.

Structural Innovation

Beneath its elegant exterior lies a robust structural framework designed to withstand the test of time. The main structure, a space truss system comprising steel and pre-stressed concrete elements, spans an impressive 74 meters. Ingeniously integrated into the design are fish-belly shaped pre-stressed concrete cross-storey trusses, supported by V-shaped fair-faced concrete columns. This meticulous attention to detail ensures structural integrity while optimizing interior space for athlete amenities and dressing rooms.

In essence, the Zhejiang HuangLong Aquatics Center transcends conventional boundaries, embodying the spirit of athletic excellence and architectural innovation. As a symbol of Hangzhou’s vibrant cultural landscape, it stands as a beacon of inspiration and a testament to the limitless possibilities of human endeavor.
