Rediscovering a Sanctuary
Martine Ilana, an industrial designer, sought to recreate the vibrant ambiance of Venice Beach upon returning to Detroit, Michigan, with her family. The Sodon Lake House, spanning 5,300 square feet, stood uninhabited for four years, nestled among trees, including a majestic 150-year-old willow by the shoreline.
Embracing Midcentury Modernism
Perched on a steeply sloping site overlooking Dichotheric Lake, the Sodon Lake House epitomizes midcentury modern design. Its unassuming exterior belies a layout of interconnected living spaces, each offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding landscape.
Meeting a Tight Timeline
Facing the challenge of completing the entire project within 12 months, the owners enlisted Iannuzzi Studio for their design expertise and client-centric approach. Collaborating with Martine’s sustainable design firm, Temescal Creative, they focused on healthy and durable materials for the home’s renovation.
Preserving Heritage, Enhancing Sustainability
The renovation aimed to maintain the original 1950s structure while updating finishes and improving sustainability. Exterior enhancements, such as an Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) and a cedar rain screen, bolstered insulation and ventilation while blending seamlessly with the wooded surroundings.
Interior Transformation
Inside, efficient circulation and access to daylight guided layout changes. Bright surfaces, low-maintenance materials, and no-VOC finishes contribute to a healthy and uplifting environment. Exposed structural slabs and polished surfaces minimize unnecessary material finishes, promoting simplicity and sustainability.
Artistic Restoration
Completed in 2022, the Sodon Lake House stands as a testament to thoughtful restoration and modernization. It has been transformed into an artistic, chic, and inviting haven that celebrates essential living amidst the tranquil beauty of nature.
