Design Challenges and Ambitions
The garden flat at Terzetto House initially suffered from design compromises, including low ceiling heights, dim interiors, and poor connectivity to the expansive rear garden. Recognizing the potential for a refined and sophisticated home, the client entrusted ConForm Architects with the task of creating a space that seamlessly integrates with the large rear garden while exuding elegance and texture.
Conceptualizing the Extension
The rear extension of Terzetto House draws inspiration from the decorative bay windows and ornate details typical of Victorian terraced homes in the Conservation Area. Conceptually, the extension takes the form of a contemporary canted bay, angled to minimize visual impact on neighboring properties while paying homage to the characterful Victorian architecture of the area.
Spatial Experience and Natural Light
Upon entry, visitors are greeted with curated views through rooms to the south-facing garden, facilitated by a strategic arrangement of skylights, clerestory windows, and glazing. These elements capture natural light and glimpses of the garden, guiding the journey through the property and enhancing the overall experience.
Maximizing Space and Functionality
To reorient the property towards the garden and maximize bedroom space, ConForm introduced visual illusions, such as skylights and a clerestory window, to provide views and ventilation in previously landlocked areas. Additionally, clever design elements like hidden pocket doors and sophisticated light oak cabinetry optimize functionality without compromising aesthetics.
Precision Detailing and Material Harmony
In the rear living space, precision detailing takes center stage with the addition of a large trapezoidal skylight, directing natural light into the internal kitchen zone while maintaining privacy. The harmonious interplay of materials—textural clay-toned plaster, green terrazzo, and concrete plinth—creates a cohesive and inviting environment that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living.
Conclusion: A Testament to Innovative Design
Terzetto House exemplifies ConForm Architects’ innovative approach to design, overcoming spatial challenges through bold material choices and meticulous detailing. The result is a textural and natural home that harmonizes with its surroundings, offering a sophisticated yet inviting retreat for its occupants.
