Embracing Nature Sarah’s House by The Manser Practice

A Tranquil Retreat

Nestled within an existing olive orchard, Sarah’s House is a picturesque four-bedroom home perched 1000 feet above the north coast of Corfu. Embracing the natural landscape, the house harmoniously integrates with its surroundings to offer a serene retreat.

Natural Materials and Spectacular Views

Cut into the hillside, Sarah’s House is clad in a blend of olive wood and Corfu stone, sourced directly from the site itself. Its simple yet elegant layout maximizes the stunning location, with all habitable rooms oriented southward, boasting breathtaking views across the Ionian Sea towards Albania. Shady terraces extend from each room, providing tranquil spaces to enjoy the Mediterranean scenery.

Sustainable Cooling Solutions

In a region where temperatures often soar above 40 degrees Celsius, keeping the house cool posed a significant challenge. Rather than relying on energy-intensive air-conditioning systems, Sarah’s House employs passive cooling techniques. Thick stone walls, polished concrete floors, and a green roof minimize solar heat gain while promoting natural ventilation. The expansive roof also serves as a rainwater collection system, storing water in an 80-ton tank to meet the house’s water requirements.

Self-Sufficient Energy Generation

Situated on a remote site, Sarah’s House is designed to generate the majority of its energy needs independently. Solar water heaters and photovoltaic panels contribute approximately 90% of the energy requirements, supplemented by air source heat pumps. Surplus energy is sold back to the grid, ensuring efficient use of resources. A thriving vegetable garden provides fresh produce, while pruned olive trees supply wood for the open fireplace during winter months. Additionally, on-site reverse osmosis ensures potable tap water, reducing reliance on plastic water bottles.

Simple Living, Sustainable Design

The combination of these sustainable features culminates in a simple, low-maintenance dwelling that offers year-round comfort. Sarah’s House exemplifies how thoughtful design can create a harmonious relationship between architecture and the natural environment, providing residents with a tranquil haven to call home.
