Revitalizing Tradition Haiyan Ke Tang Renovation

Project Overview

Haiyan Ke Tang, situated in Haiyan Village within the Dian Lake National Tourist Resort in Kunming, underwent a transformation prompted by an invitation from the Dianchi Art Season 2024. Originally serving as a public dining space after the closure of Haiyan Primary School, the renovation aimed to upgrade Ke Tang into a multifunctional community hub, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Preservation and Repurposing

The renovation project focused on repurposing existing structures while incorporating necessary upgrades for structural integrity and operational efficiency. Upgrades included improvements to the kitchen, roofing, lighting, and outdoor amenities. Materials and objects were refurbished and reused wherever possible, maintaining a sense of continuity with the village’s history and traditions.

Embracing the “Depth of Canopy”

The renovation process embraced the concept of the “depth of canopy,” recognizing the economic and functional value of temporary structures. By preserving the original character of Ke Tang while introducing subtle adjustments, the project sought to unleash the space’s potential as a vibrant community center.

Economic Considerations

Economic factors played a key role in decision-making throughout the renovation process. The project aimed to maintain the cost-effectiveness and convenience of hosting events at Ke Tang, ensuring it remains a popular venue for local gatherings and celebrations.

Community Engagement

The renovation of Ke Tang was a collaborative effort involving villagers who developed a comprehensive set of procedures for hosting events. This communal approach, characterized by a clear division of labor and orderly operation, reflects the essence of Ke Tang as a space for collective celebration and conviviality.

Future Prospects

With the completion of the renovation, Haiyan Ke Tang is poised to become a focal point for community life in Haiyan Village. The newly renovated study library and health clinic, along with the remaining blank spaces, offer opportunities for further community engagement and cultural expression. As the space evolves over time, it is expected to continue embodying the spirit of local conviviality and tradition.
