Reimagining Community Spaces Renovation of East Nanjing Road Sub-district Community Comprehensive Life Service Center

Background

The Renovation of East Nanjing Road Sub-district Community Comprehensive Life Service Center, located in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, stands as a pivotal project within the city’s urban renewal initiative, “One River, One Creek.” Originally established in 1989 as the Shanghai Wireless Radio Instrument Factory, the building has been reimagined as the Nanjing East Road Street Community Service Center (Zero-Distance Homeland), earning recognition for its excellence in Shanghai’s “15-Minute Living Circle” award.

Inward-Growing Landscape

Challenged by the square shape of the existing building, our design approach focused on integrating natural vitality into the urban fabric. Inspired by the vibrant ivy climbing the walls, we sought to deepen the ecological essence of the site. The introduction of lush greenery and the creation of the “Suzhou Green Funnel,” a funnel-shaped landscape staircase, seamlessly connect the riverbank to the rooftop, providing a serene oasis for residents to unwind and connect with nature.

Composite Functionality

Vertically stacked to optimize space, the center accommodates a diverse range of functions catering to residents of all ages. From community service stations and cafes on the ground floor to fitness centers and multifunctional halls on the upper levels, each floor offers a unique blend of amenities. By selectively opening up portions of the building and integrating smart zoning systems, we strike a balance between security and public accessibility, fostering a sense of openness and integration.

Shared Community

Designed to promote community interaction and support, the layout encourages residents to come together, fostering a sense of belonging and neighborliness. Open corners, semi-outdoor platforms, and public activity zones create opportunities for collective experiences, transforming the center into a vertical hub for community engagement.

Popular Terrace

The rooftop terrace, overlooking the Huangpu section of the Suzhou River, serves as a miniature vertical park, offering panoramic views and leisure spaces for residents to enjoy year-round. From fitness areas to observation pavilions, the terrace enriches the building’s public value, creating an inviting space for residents of all ages to experience the warmth and care of the city.

In conclusion, the Renovation of East Nanjing Road Sub-district Community Comprehensive Life Service Center exemplifies the transformative power of architecture in creating vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community spaces along the Suzhou River.
