Enhancing Visitor Experience The Bothy & Tùr at Cuningar Loop

Project Overview

The Bothy & Tùr project, led by jmarchitects, is part of the Cuningar Loop Forestry Park, a transformative green space initiative at the core of Clyde Gateway. Covering approximately 37 acres, this park boasts urban woodland, river frontage, and activity spaces, making it the largest urban park in South Lanarkshire. The aim of The Bothy & Tùr is to enrich the visitor experience, promote community engagement, and extend park usage.

Design Concept

The Bothy serves as a permanent base for park activities, fostering community interaction and spirit. The focal point, The Living Room, hosts various events, talks, and gatherings while offering connections to nature and the surrounding woodland. The Tùr, or tower, provides an accessible viewpoint for visitors to admire panoramic views of the woodland and cityscape.

Traditional Influence and Sensitivity to Environment

Drawing inspiration from traditional Scottish Bothies, the design incorporates a compact linear plan and raw materials like charred timber cladding and sedum roofs, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Large windows frame picturesque views, and barn doors facilitate indoor-outdoor interaction, creating a dynamic environment for year-round use.

Sustainable Design Approach

The project prioritizes energy efficiency, renewable energy, and water management. While maintaining the off-grid ethos of traditional Bothies, modern amenities are integrated to meet contemporary needs. High levels of natural daylight, natural ventilation, and low-energy systems such as air-to-air heat pumps and photovoltaic panels ensure sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Tùr: A Landmark for Exploration

Strategically positioned at a high point within the park, the Tùr serves as a landmark, enticing visitors to explore the surroundings. Elevated above the tree line, it offers sweeping views of the city skyline. The walkway to the Tùr, designed for full accessibility, guides park users through the woodland, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment of previously inaccessible areas.

In summary, The Bothy & Tùr project not only enhances the visitor experience but also embodies sustainability, community engagement, and sensitivity to the natural environment, contributing to the holistic development of the Cuningar Loop Forestry Park.
