Illuminating Bergamo: The Glowing Bicycle Station by Studio Capitanio Architetti

Situated at a pivotal location on the outskirts of the historic center and near the train station, the first bicycle station in Bergamo emerges as a beacon of green mobility. Crafted by Studio Capitanio, this innovative facility stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to cycling initiatives and urban revitalization.

Integrating Mobility and Sustainability

Designed to seamlessly integrate with the contemporary development of Piazzale Marconi, the bicycle station serves as a nexus for multiple modes of transportation, including public transit, cycling, and pedestrian pathways. This compact structure, covering a mere 200 square meters, accommodates up to 132 bicycles, offering a vital service to residents and visitors alike.

A Beacon of Light and Transparency

The architectural concept revolves around transparency, safety, and accessibility. Utilizing a low-tech infrastructure, the station features uninterrupted glass facades supported by a fabricated metal structure. The absence of containment frames enhances visibility and natural light diffusion, creating an inviting atmosphere during the day and transforming the station into a luminous beacon at night.

Energy Self-Sufficiency and Circular Design

To minimize environmental impact, the station harnesses solar energy through photovoltaic panels installed on the roof, ensuring full energy self-sufficiency. Embracing circular design principles, all materials used are reusable or recyclable, and the entire structure is designed for easy disassembly and relocation. The steel frame, coated in white, not only enhances aesthetics but also aligns with the facility’s branding and communication strategy.

Innovative Bicycle Management System

The station’s management system employs state-of-the-art technology, including access badges and hydraulic lifting systems, to facilitate automated bicycle storage across two levels of racks. This efficient and user-friendly approach reflects the studio’s commitment to enhancing the cycling experience while minimizing environmental impact.

Embracing Soft Mobility

According to Remo Capitanio, the founder of Studio Capitanio, the project aimed to create an emotional space that enriches the urban landscape while promoting soft mobility. By blending functionality with aesthetics, the Glowing Bicycle Station illuminates Bergamo, symbolizing the city’s progressive vision for sustainable urban development.
