Dalaman International Airport Terminal II, situated on the Mediterranean Riviera of Turkey, represents a seamless continuation of the airport complex, following the completion of the domestic flights terminal by EAA in 2006. With a focus on sustainability and regional identity, the new 105,585-square-meter international terminal embodies innovative design principles to enhance both functionality and environmental performance.
Solar Shading System
Aligned with the design ethos of the original terminal, the primary objective of Terminal II was to implement an intelligent solar shading system that responds to the region’s climatic conditions. Drawing inspiration from vernacular architecture in the area, the terminal features a protective canopy that acts as a filtering system for direct sunlight, creating a comfortable microclimate within. Sunshades, integrated with photovoltaic panels, not only mitigate solar heat gain but also contribute to the terminal’s energy self-sufficiency.
Sustainable Canopy Design
The canopy, a defining feature of the terminal, is constructed with a steel structure, harmonizing with the concrete-frame structure of the building. This detached scheme regulates airflow between the terminal and the canopy, ensuring optimal ventilation while minimizing energy consumption. The geometric design of the roof allows ample natural light to penetrate the public spaces, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.
Holistic Design Approach
Continuing the design language of the first terminal, Terminal II emphasizes a holistic approach to architectural serenity. Through regular repetition and fragmented masses, the terminal seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, visually blending into the prairie Mediterranean landscape. Wide glass surfaces not only provide panoramic views but also reflect the natural beauty of the region on the terminal’s vertical façades.
Materiality and Interior Design
In contrast to conventional airport terminals, Terminal II embraces a subdued material palette and interior landscaping to evoke a sense of tranquility. Exposed concrete, natural wood, and matte finishes create a warm and inviting atmosphere, enhancing the traveler’s experience while maintaining a connection to the natural environment. Carefully landscaped inner gardens further reinforce the fluidity between the man-made and natural elements, enriching the terminal’s spatial quality.
Dalaman International Airport Terminal II stands as a testament to sustainable design innovation, seamlessly blending architectural excellence with environmental responsibility. By embracing regional identity and employing cutting-edge technology, EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture has created a terminal that not only serves as a gateway to the Mediterranean but also as a symbol of sustainable aviation infrastructure for the future.
