Barfold Estate, nestled in the Heathcote wine region, stands as a serene retreat offering accommodation to guests amidst the picturesque vineyard. Designed by LAYAN, this project embodies simplicity and generosity while harmonizing with its natural surroundings.
Location and Design Concept
Located in the Southwest corner of the Heathcote wine region, Barfold Estate is a haven for wine enthusiasts, situated just a 75-minute drive north of Melbourne. LAYAN was tasked with creating a building that seamlessly blends into the landscape and provides comfortable accommodation for visitors. The site overlooks the vineyard and is surrounded by old gumtrees, offering a tranquil setting for guests.
Architectural Character
The building’s design embraces simplicity and rustic charm, reminiscent of the agricultural buildings in the area. A simple geometric form emerges in the landscape, clad in reclaimed timber that weathers over time, blending with the silvered trunks of the neighboring eucalypts. This choice of material adds to the building’s rustic character and ensures its integration with the natural environment.
Interior Space
The interior space is characterized by a large open ceiling, with ancillary spaces arranged around it. Natural sunlight filters through the space, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. In the evening, carefully placed lighting fixtures and the warmth of the fireplace illuminate the space, creating a cozy ambiance. The interior finishes, including polished concrete, natural timber, glass, and tile, complement the rustic aesthetic and evoke a sense of tranquility.
Accommodation
Barfold Estate features two large guestrooms, each equipped with a spacious dining and kitchen area, a lounge with a daybed alcove, and a bathing alcove with a free-standing bathtub offering picturesque views. The en-suite bathrooms and king-sized beds ensure a comfortable stay for guests. A central, double-sided fireplace separates the living area from the sleeping quarters, adding warmth and intimacy to the space.
Conclusion
Barfold Estate by LAYAN exemplifies a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, offering guests a serene retreat in the heart of the Heathcote wine region. With its rustic charm, generous spaces, and thoughtful design, this accommodation serves as a welcoming sanctuary for visitors seeking tranquility amidst the beauty of the vineyard landscape.
