The Chibougamau-Chapais airport serves as a vital gateway to the Eeyou Istchee James Bay region, catering to the communities of Chibougamau, Chapais, and Oujé-Bougoumou. With increasing passenger traffic, the need for a new terminal became apparent to accommodate growing demand while reflecting the aspirations and culture of the region.
Meeting Diverse Needs
Beyond passenger travel, the airport facilitates freight, medical evacuations, and forest firefighting operations, presenting a challenge during construction. Careful planning and construction phasing allowed continuous operations within the existing terminal, ensuring uninterrupted service. Once operational, the new terminal enabled the expansion of the airport tarmac to enhance service capabilities.
Architectural Design
The new terminal comprises two low structures flanking a glazed concourse, serving as a central hub for passengers. This design ensures seamless connectivity and accessibility to all terminal functions and services. Visual connectivity from the parking lot to the runway enhances the passenger experience, allowing travelers to observe aircraft movements.
Cultural Expression
The exterior façade prominently features the airport’s name in Cree and French, alongside artwork by Emmanuelle Gendron, celebrating the rich culture of the Eeyou Istchee region. Gendron’s work, integrated into the timber curtain walls, pays homage to the local heritage and was selected in collaboration with community representatives.
Sustainable Construction
Local materials, including glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT), showcase the region’s abundant natural resources. Engineered wood and steel components form the roof structure, allowing for large spans and creating an open, inviting public space. Generous overhangs and strategic use of natural light enhance energy efficiency and contribute to the terminal’s sustainability.
Core Design Principles
The terminal’s design embodies core principles of transparency, lightness, comfort, and functionality. Timber curtain walls provide natural light and structural bracing, while the clerestory acts as a load-bearing axis, eliminating the need for additional structural elements. This minimalist, efficient approach ensures a welcoming and efficient space for travelers while respecting the environment and culture of the region.
As a symbol of connectivity and cultural identity, the Chibougamau-Chapais Air Terminal stands as a testament to architectural innovation and sustainable design in the heart of the Eeyou Istchee James Bay region.
