Exploring the M+MS Bar: A Whisky Experience

Unveiling the Concept

Nestled in Jongno-gu, South Korea, the M+MS Bar designed by Studio GIMGEOSIL offers a unique sensory journey centered around one of whisky’s iconic elements – cork. Recognizing cork’s intrinsic properties of elasticity and water resistance, the architects seamlessly integrated it into the bar’s design, elevating the whisky experience beyond mere taste.

Embracing Cork as Identity

At M+MS Bar, cork transcends its conventional role as a bottle sealant to become a defining feature of the space. From furniture to doorknobs, cork manifests itself in various forms, immersing guests in its tactile and visual allure. Unlike traditional cork, the dark brown hue used at M+MS Bar adds a touch of sophistication to the ambiance.

Innovative Utilization

Exploring cork’s fire-resistant nature, the architects ingeniously crafted chairs using this versatile material. Despite encountering challenges such as cork powder residue and structural integrity, they devised a solution by reinforcing the seat boards with high-density material and applying a specialized coating to maintain the corky texture without compromise.

Inspired by Whisky’s Palette

Drawing inspiration from the rich hues of whisky, M+MS Bar exudes warmth and elegance through its choice of materials. Red Travertine marble, reminiscent of aged whisky tones, adorns the space, complemented by wood slats and Barrisol lighting that evoke the essence of whisky aging in oak barrels. The harmonious interplay of textures and colors creates a sensory feast for patrons.

A Multisensory Experience

Beyond taste alone, M+MS Bar invites guests to engage with whisky through all their senses. From the visual allure of the interior design to the tactile sensation of cork-infused furnishings, every element is meticulously curated to evoke an immersive whisky experience. It’s a space where patrons can savor whisky not just with their palates but with their entire being.
