The University of Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) Arena, designed by Opsis Architecture, draws inspiration from the undulating landscape of the Palouse region, sculpted by cataclysmic floods at the end of the Ice Age. Serving as a gateway to the university campus, this 4,000-seat multi-use arena hosts various events, including athletic competitions, concerts, and convocations.
A Sustainable Spectacle
The arena offers an intimate spectator experience while showcasing the region’s unique characteristics and commitment to sustainable practices. Departing from traditional steel and concrete designs, the use of mass timber and ample natural light highlights the project’s eco-conscious approach. Collaborating with regional foresters and wood industry partners, the arena pioneers innovation in sustainable wood design.
Embracing Idaho’s Legacy
Rooted in Idaho’s history, the arena serves as a testament to athletic achievement and educational innovation. It doubles as a learning laboratory for students in forestry and engineering departments, showcasing the innovative use of locally harvested timber in structural elements. The design embodies a celebration of the past while looking towards the future.
Architectural Marvels
The arena’s architectural expression mirrors the Palouse’s rolling hills, with contoured roof forms invoking the region’s natural landscape. Charcoal-stained cedar walls pay homage to early homestead structures, juxtaposed with smooth fabricated beams. Translucent glazing infills between roof planes provide diffused natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Integrating Utility and Beauty
To realize the beauty of the wood structure, mechanical and electrical systems were seamlessly integrated. The primary structure features splayed portal trusses and king post truss systems with concealed utility pathways. The arena’s west side houses athletic offices, locker rooms, and an alumni center, with a Vandal terrace offering panoramic views of the Palouse hills.
