Spiritual Essence
Perched above the Sunset Cliffs with a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma Nazarene University’s campus embodies the enveloping love of Christ. The university envisioned a new chapel to replace the existing one, serving as a spiritual anchor and a serene sanctuary for reflection. This chapel was to physically embody eleven core principles, ranging from God’s presence to expressing intention.
Architectural Journey
The journey to the chapel is symbolic, guiding visitors through a ceremonial procession of body, mind, and spirit. A meandering path winds from the campus, up the hill, past lush plantings, and through outdoor garden prayer areas. As visitors approach the chapel, the scale gradually shifts, compressing at the entryway to envelop them in a comforting embrace before opening into the prayer area.
Materiality and Symbolism
Material choices play a vital role in symbolizing Christ’s presence. Robust materials like concrete and rammed earth signify permanence and strength, while organic elements such as wood evoke warmth and embrace. Earth-toned colors harmonize with the rocky cliff environment, rooting the chapel in its natural surroundings.
Simplicity and Serenity
The architectural design prioritizes simplicity to minimize environmental distractions and foster a deeper connection with Christ. Pure geometries and the absence of pews create a tranquil space for spiritual contemplation. Soft, diffuse lighting filtered through intricate wicker screens imbues the chapel with a serene ambiance.
Symbolic Elements
Key features within the chapel carry profound symbolism. A free-standing cross of hickory and stainless steel stands as the centerpiece, positioned away from the nave wall to encourage interaction. Three personal prayer spaces, representing the Trinity, radiate from the central cross, offering intimate moments for connection and reflection.
Spiritual Retreat
The Prescott Chapel serves as a tangible expression of the university’s deeply spiritual ethos. Despite its modest size, it stands as a powerful sanctuary, offering a private refuge for prayer, meditation, and communion with the divine.
