Setting a Bold Vision
When the Goa State government launched an international competition for the design of the National Institute of Water Sports in Goa, it sought an architectural expression that transcended mere functionality. The aim was twofold: to make a bold, iconic statement and to adopt a fresh approach that resonated with global architectural trends while remaining grounded in Goan vernacular aesthetics.
Design Approach
The architects at M:OFA Studios began by reimagining the functional brief, organizing the campus into distinct zones while emphasizing fluidity and continuity between them. This approach aimed to foster informal interactions and create dynamic spaces conducive to collaboration. Inspired by the surrounding sea and Goan town, the architectural language sought to establish a strong connection with the local context.
Balancing Form and Function
In addressing the dichotomy between adventure water sports and formal education, the design aimed to maintain a delicate balance between practical functionality and dynamic aesthetics. Drawing inspiration from the sea’s dynamic nature, the architecture mimics the movement of trochoidal waves, evoking a sense of constant motion and energy. This fluidity is reflected in the design’s shifting perspectives and ever-changing play of light and shadows.
Dynamic Architecture
The architecture of the National Institute of Water Sports is a testament to its dynamic inspiration. From above, it resembles a mythical creature emerging from the Arabian Sea, while from the ground, it appears in constant motion, engaging users with its fluid dialogue of walls, floors, and roofs. The structure’s mega roof, fabricated using digital techniques and color-coated roofing sheets, drapes the complex like a free-flowing wave, symbolizing the institute’s spirit of adventure.
Innovative Construction
To realize the vision of a dynamic roof structure within budget constraints, the architects employed digital fabrication techniques. The grid shell structure, comprising over 15,000 pipes and 5,000 customized roof panels, was meticulously crafted to fit together seamlessly, creating a visually striking and technically sophisticated roof. This digitally fabricated marvel stands as a testament to the institute’s commitment to innovation and excellence.
