Introduction
Atelier PRO architects undertook the design of the new head office for Anthura, a global leader in plant and seed breeding. The aim was to create a modern workspace that not only reflects Anthura’s core values but also serves as a welcoming environment for clients. Located in the glass horticultural area around Bleiswijk, the Netherlands, the head office complements Anthura’s existing greenhouses and research facilities.
Integration with the Surroundings
The design approach focused on seamlessly integrating the office building with the surrounding greenhouses and laboratories. By connecting the office to the display greenhouse, the design emphasizes Anthura’s technical expertise and innovation. Transparent elements in the facade create a cohesive campus-like appearance, highlighting the relationship between the office and the adjacent facilities.
Scale and Appearance
One of the challenges was reconciling the difference in scale between the greenhouses and the office building. To address this, the office was placed on a raised pedestal, visually distinguishing it from the expansive glass structures behind it. Vertical facade elements were introduced to enhance the building’s presence and create a sense of corporate identity.
Functionality and Experience
The interior design prioritized functionality and user experience. Publicly accessible spaces guide visitors on a ‘customer journey’ through the exhibition layer, while staff areas are organized around a central canteen. Flexible workspaces and concentration areas promote collaboration and productivity. Warm tones, greenery, and branding elements throughout the building reinforce Anthura’s identity.
Garden and Context
An enclosed garden between the office and greenhouses serves as an outdoor extension of the tropical indoor atmosphere. Designed by Oase Landscape and Urban Design, the garden complements the overall landscape concept, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
Reflection and Future Implications
The project not only revitalizes Anthura’s office space but also raises broader questions about the relationship between urban and rural landscapes. By actively defining the environment in a greenhouse-dominated area, Atelier PRO demonstrates the potential for thoughtful design to shape the future of the Dutch landscape.
