Foster + Partners introduces ICÔNE, a new office complex in Belval, Luxembourg, spanning 18,800 square meters. Embracing light and greenery, this architectural marvel is designed to cultivate a culture of co-creation and collaboration. Its innovative layout anticipates the future demand for adaptable and secure workspaces, while paying homage to Belval’s rich industrial heritage.
Embracing Urban Context
Situated in Belval, a dynamic urban quarter blending research, education, leisure, and commerce, ICÔNE seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. The design carefully considers the scale and characteristics of neighboring structures, with distinct entrances tailored to Porte de France and Place de l’Académie. Ground-level amenities, including shops, cafes, and restaurants, enliven the pedestrian experience.
Collaborative Design Approach
In collaboration with local firm BFF architectes, Foster + Partners conceptualized ICÔNE as a harmonious fusion of two wings enveloping a central atrium. The orthogonal façade and roof echo the industrial context, accentuating the building’s structural grid. At the heart of the atrium stands the iconic Belval blast furnace, serving as a powerful symbol of the area’s heritage.
Dynamic Interior Spaces
Contrasting with its formal exterior, ICÔNE boasts fluid internal spaces designed to promote interaction and connectivity. The atrium’s stepped terraces create a striking arrival sequence, seamlessly bridging the gap between street level and plaza. Open circulation areas enhance vibrancy, while landscaped terraces offer inviting settings for informal meetings and relaxation.
Sustainable Façade Design
The façade of ICÔNE is not just a structural element but also a sustainable feature, optimizing internal office spaces while providing solar shading and maximizing natural light. External green loggias further enhance environmental responsiveness, offering occupants visual connections with the surrounding landscape.
