Transforming Spaces Harlem Studio by Drawing Agency

Drawing Agency presents the Harlem Studio, a conversion project transforming a two-bedroom mid-century apartment in Upper Manhattan into a dynamic live/work studio space for two artists.

Adaptive Design Approach

The renovation focused on maximizing the existing layout’s efficiency, with minimal alterations to the original plaster walls. Drawing Agency strategically intervened only where necessary, preserving the apartment’s character while creating new connections between living and working areas. Limited demolition was carried out, primarily targeting a single closet, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom tiles, with the rest of the surfaces either repaired or complemented with new millwork.

Integrating Natural Light

The studio capitalizes on west-facing windows, harnessing the strong sunset lighting to influence the choice of colors and materials. Sculptural additions accentuate social spaces while maintaining the original unit’s integrity. Vertical elements emphasize the workspace, while sliding doors optimize circulation spaces for moving paintings and equipment.

Innovative Solutions

Challenges such as an existing utility chase obstructing daylight were creatively addressed. The “Big Wall” in the kitchen was sculpted around these obstacles, incorporating an opening adjacent to the intercom unit and concealing the chase behind a smooth curved surface. In the living room, the Long Bookshelf extends the south wall, providing functional spaces for dining and relaxation with panoramic views.

Preservation and Modernization

The studio’s key principle was to retain as much of the apartment’s existing materials as possible, modernizing only those elements in need of improvement. A strategic program of millwork and minimal new drywall elements navigates the existing bowed plaster walls and new engineered timber floor, utilizing a durable palette of plywood, homasote, and aluminum.

The Harlem Studio by Drawing Agency exemplifies a harmonious blend of preservation and innovation, creating a dynamic environment that seamlessly integrates living and working spaces for artistic pursuits.
