João Gonçalo Lopes transformed an old car workshop into Desvio, a vibrant collective work and event space catering to art professionals. The project involved a comprehensive overhaul, including interior design, furniture construction, and lighting installation.
Conceptualization and Layout
The space, spanning 167sqm, was reimagined to seamlessly integrate with its surroundings. Large entrance gates create a fluid transition between the street and interior, fostering a sense of connection with the urban environment. The layout revolves around distinct courtyards, each with its unique ambiance, catering to various activities and events while ensuring a smooth transition from public to private spaces.
Embracing Reuse and Sustainability
Desvio embraces the ethos of sustainability by incorporating reclaimed materials and repurposed elements. Salvaged parts from demolitions were meticulously collected and integrated into the design, lending character and authenticity to the space. The juxtaposition of old materials and lush greenery evokes an outdoor atmosphere, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior realms.
Dynamic Working Pods
The working pods within Desvio are conceived as adaptable structures, allowing occupants to personalize their spaces according to their preferences and activities. This flexibility fosters a dynamic environment where openness and privacy coexist within a shared framework, promoting collaboration and individual expression.
Hands-On Craftsmanship
A hands-on approach to construction enabled the fine-tuning of each element to perfection, ensuring a harmonious integration of materials and details. This meticulous attention to craftsmanship imbues Desvio with a sense of intimacy and warmth, creating distinct atmospheres tailored to different working areas.
Creating Microcosms of Inspiration
The careful selection and combination of materials contribute to the creation of diverse ambiances and microcosms within Desvio. From collaborative workspaces to intimate corners, each area exudes its unique charm, fostering creativity and inspiration among its occupants.
Desvio stands as a testament to João Gonçalo Lopes’s vision of repurposing urban spaces into dynamic hubs for creative expression and collaboration.
