Fukei Co. presents the Fuji Skirt Office, situated in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, serving as both a workspace and a sanctuary for crane factory workers. Despite the cluttered surroundings, including neighboring houses and factories, the site boasts occasional views of Mt. Fuji, inspiring the architects to create a serene retreat that reconnects occupants with the essence of the mountainous landscape.
Harmonizing with Nature
The design concept revolves around creating a tranquil environment where artisans can rejuvenate their bodies and minds while embracing the essence of Mt. Fuji. The exterior of the office features FRP panels, resembling the drape of a skirt, adorned with patterns inspired by lava rocks found on-site. The garden, adorned with ferns, red pines, and indigenous plants, further integrates the office with the natural surroundings.
Reflective Facade
The exterior mortar of the office mimics the texture of lava rock, enhancing its connection to the surrounding landscape. White drapes covering the façade act as a reflective screen, capturing the play of light and shadows throughout the day. When viewed from certain angles, the building appears to merge with the factory, creating a surreal yet harmonious visual effect.
Dynamic Interior Lighting
The interior spaces are bathed in natural light, which varies throughout the day. In the mornings, angled light filters through the top lights, while in the afternoons, it penetrates through the FRP panels, casting a mesmerizing array of light grains reminiscent of lava bubbles. This dynamic interplay of light creates an immersive experience, evoking the tranquil ambiance of Mt. Fuji’s foothills.
The Fuji Skirt Office by Fukei Co. exemplifies a harmonious blend of architecture and nature, providing a serene refuge for workers amidst an industrial landscape. Through thoughtful design interventions and meticulous attention to detail, the office rekindles a sense of connection with the majestic Mt. Fuji, fostering a profound appreciation for the surrounding environment.
